Financial adoption of children with a mental disability in Tanzania

Introducing the Umoja Collection, a handcrafted collection made of mother-of-pearl and recycled leather with a special purpose. Each piece of jewelry represents a child with disabilities from the Moshi community in Tanzania. Together, they learn through hands-on training that equips them with the skills to grow, become more independent, and gain the opportunity to earn their own income. This teamwork truly embodies the essence of the project: “Umoja means unity—being as one”.

Priscus, Shamsi, Neema, Habibu, Amiri, Saidi, and Mama Saidi are part of the group that actively participates in the Umoja Center and whose stories are highlighted in the collection. In support of this charitable initiative, half of the proceeds from sales will be donated to the center.

The Umoja Jewelry collection designed by: Mari

Priscus Earrings. His connection with Umoja dates back to when he was 9 years old. Now 24, he remains involved in the training programs, and with Umoja’s help, a home was built for his family of six.

Shamsi Necklace. The shy and quiet little boy who’s become into a teenager with great progress. The two shades of the shell represent that great change and its own radiance.

Neema Earrings. Her disability began when she was 5 years old; according to her family, she was treated unsuccessfully. Now, at 28, she participates in the program. The earrings represent Neema and her young daughter.

Mama Saidi. Each circle represents one of her children, all of whom have disabilities—including Mama Saidi. Amiri, Saidi, and Habibu are trained at the Umoja Center.

Finally, Habibu Necklace. This shell is an Abalone Palua; since it’s quite thin, it has a layer of acrylic on the back to reinforce it.
